Hair Loss In Women
Generally called alopecia, hair loss in women is more accurately known as androgenetic alopecia in women. Female pattern baldness is caused by hormones and genes mainly, but can also be exasperated by aging. The typical lifespan of a hair begins at the follicle and grows at a rate of about one-half inch per month for a total of between two and six years at which point it rests and then falls out. After this normal hair cycle in females, a new hair begins to grow at the follicle and the process is repeated all over again.

But when women’s hair loss occurs, the replacement hair does not return and an empty follicle remains in its place after the old hair has reached the end of its life cycle. - Medications (i.e. antidepressants, chemo, beta blockers, etc.)
- Alopecia areata (patchy loss of hair in women)
- Syphilis
- Surgery or major illness (usually temporary)
